The end of Britney Spears’ child support payments to Kevin Federline has become a flashpoint in their already strained relationship. Federline now faces a City National Bank lawsuit over $117,704.77 across three accounts, while a source quoted by Star Magazine says Spears views his financial trouble as “karma.” Those characterizations come from unnamed sources; the bank debt is described in court filings reported by People.

The timing has given the dispute fresh momentum. Federline reportedly opened the accounts in December 2024, about a month after Spears made her final child support payment. The two have continued to trade claims in public, with Federline’s 2025 memoir adding a new source of friction.

People Magazine reported that court documents show the balance across a credit card, a personal line of credit and an overdraft line. The bank is seeking the unpaid amounts along with interest, and Federline’s last reported payment was in May 2025.

The reported due dates varied by account: the overdraft line came due in April 2025, the personal credit line in June, and the credit card balance was due in August. The lawsuit places a concrete figure on Federline’s finances, but the connection to the end of support is a matter of timing rather than evidence about the reason for the debt.

Reports describe Spears as angry

A source cited by Star Magazine claimed Spears feels Federline benefited from her money for years and is resentful that he published a memoir after the support payments stopped. “Britney paid his bills the past 20 years,” the source said, adding, “He’s sucked millions off of her, and the minute the gravy train stopped, he wrote that horrible book about her.”

The same source said Spears is angry and believes Federline harmed her relationship with their sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. Another claim attributed to the source is that she sees his current money problems as “payback” and thinks they confirm that his interest was always financial. These are reported views, not statements from Spears herself.

Spears has previously disputed Federline’s account of their family life. Her representative said after the memoir’s release that Federline and others were “profiting off her” after child support ended, while emphasizing that Spears cared about the well-being of their children.

Federline’s memoir, You Thought You Knew, was released in October 2025. It recounts the couple’s two-year marriage, which ended in 2007, and raises allegations about Spears’ behavior around their children.

As The Guardian reported, Federline alleged that Spears used cocaine while breastfeeding. He also wrote that their sons had told him she sometimes watched them from a doorway while holding a knife. Federline described the situation as “racing toward something irreversible” and said he feared Sean and Jayden would be left “holding the pieces.”

Spears called the memoir’s portrayal “extremely hurtful and exhausting” in a social media statement, describing Federline’s claims as “white lies” and saying she felt “demoralized.” Her representative said the attention followed the end of child support and stressed that her concern was her sons’ well-being.

The debt case and the memoir now sit alongside a long-running family dispute, but the claims come from different sources: court reporting establishes the alleged bank balance, while the accounts of Spears’ reaction and the family allegations remain contested. The clearest measure of what comes next will be the progress of the lawsuit and whether either former spouse addresses the claims directly.
