A thriller built around Quasimodo

Netflix is recasting Quasimodo as the hunted center of a Paris thriller. The Hunchback, Soul of Paris, formerly known as Quasimodo, l’âme de Paris and later Quasimodo, the Soul of Paris, puts Victor Hugo’s familiar figure into a cholera-stricken city on the brink of revolution. The film arrives worldwide on November 27, 2026, and runs 1 hour and 43 minutes.

The newly released trailer and poster point to a bruising historical drama with action and thriller elements, rather than a conventional adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. That shift changes the story’s center of gravity: the bell-ringer is no longer simply a figure caught between the cathedral and the people around him, but a person whose body and apparent immunity make him politically useful. The premise gives the film a chase structure, while the period setting supplies a wider conflict around who gets to define him.

A familiar character in a new historical frame

The story unfolds in Paris in 1830, as cholera threatens the city and political unrest builds toward the July Revolution. Quasimodo is a stone carver whom the public regards as a monster. His apparent immunity to cholera makes him a target: a doctor wants to test him in hopes of finding a cure, while the Director of Security pursues him. Quasimodo’s effort to protect Agnès, a dancer he loves, draws him into the upheaval.

Those pressures put the character between competing forms of authority. The doctor sees a possible medical answer, the security official sees someone to pursue, and the public has already reduced Quasimodo to an appearance. The setup makes his supposed immunity a source of danger rather than a simple gift. It also gives his relationship with Agnès a practical role in the plot: protecting her becomes a reason to resist forces that want to control him.

“Paris, 1830. As cholera threatens to ravage the city, a hunchback who is carving stones and thought to be a monster might be the cure and starts being targeted by the police. Ready to do everything to protect Agnès, a dancer he is in love with, the hunchback finds himself at the heart of revolutionary uprising.”

Director Jean-François Richet says the screenplay takes inspiration from theories put forward by British archivist Adrian Glew. Glew argued that Hugo’s bell-ringer may have drawn on a real stone carver the author encountered. Richet described the film’s starting point as “a credible premise rather than a true story.” That qualification matters: the historical suggestion is a point of departure for the screenplay, not evidence that the film presents Quasimodo as a documented person. The story can borrow the texture of archival research while still making clear that its central drama is fiction.

The pursuit gives the film a clear engine, while its premise opens onto questions of class, power and medical ethics. Richet told Vanity Fair France that the story addresses “the class struggle, the people, the elites, medicine, beauty, and the beauty of the ugly.” He also pointed to a line in the film about experiments on children and vaccine development, calling it “a historical truth.” That claim is one of the film’s sharper signals: medical urgency can be used to justify coercion, especially when the person being studied has little power to refuse. The tension should give the thriller more substance than a simple pursuit, though the film will have to make those themes part of the drama rather than leave them as an explanatory frame.

Richet leads the French production

Richet’s credits include the action films Plane and Blood Father, the Mesrine crime saga and The Emperor of Paris. Éric Besnard, whose work includes Jean Valjean, wrote the screenplay with Edgar Marie. Clément Miserez and Matthieu Warter produce for Radar Films. The reported budget is approximately €30 million.

That mix of credits points toward a production built to move between period drama and physical action. Richet has worked in stories driven by pursuit and confrontation, while the setting asks for a convincing sense of Paris under pressure. A reported budget of about €30 million gives some indication of the production’s scale, but it doesn’t by itself say how the film will balance spectacle with the intimate story of a man treated as an object by both crowds and institutions. The trailer’s emphasis on pursuit suggests the filmmakers are placing momentum near the center.

Vincent Cassel plays Quasimodo

Vincent Cassel, known for Black Swan, Ocean’s Twelve and La Haine, takes on the title role with a pronounced physical transformation. The supporting cast includes Karim Leklou as the Director of Security and Benjamin Voisin as the doctor seeking to examine Quasimodo. Daphné Patakia plays Agnès, a character understood to be a reworking of Esmeralda.

Cassel’s transformation makes the casting itself part of the film’s presentation, but the role’s dramatic challenge goes beyond appearance. Quasimodo is described through the reactions of others—monster, possible cure, fugitive—and the performance will need to give him a perspective that those labels obscure. Leklou and Voisin represent opposing pressures around him, while Patakia’s Agnès anchors his personal motive within the larger political story. The film’s reworking of Esmeralda into Agnès also signals that this is a reinterpretation, not a scene-by-scene return to Hugo’s novel.

  • Karim Leklou (BAC Nord, The World Is Yours) plays the Director of Security.
  • Benjamin Voisin (Lost Illusions, Summer of 85) plays the doctor.
  • Daphné Patakia (Benedetta) plays Agnès.
  • Noémie Lvovsky (Camille Rewinds) joins the cast.
  • Sébastien Pouderoux (The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan) joins the cast.
  • Eli Nachmani joins the cast.
  • Alexis Rosenstiehl joins the cast.

Why this version’s framing matters

The strongest idea in the setup is that Quasimodo’s body becomes a public argument. People see a monster; a doctor sees a possible cure; the authorities see someone to capture. This is more significant than it looks, because it recasts the familiar outsider story as a contest over who gets to decide what a person is worth. And yet, that premise also sets a high bar: the film will need to give the medical and political conflicts real weight without reducing Agnès or Quasimodo to devices that keep the chase moving.

If you’re working in this space, the adaptation’s useful signal is its willingness to change the genre around a well-known character. The literary source provides immediate recognition, while the 1830 setting gives the film room to connect private vulnerability with public unrest. The numbers here are underwhelming as evidence of ambition: a runtime and budget can describe the package, but they can’t tell us whether the film’s ideas land. The trailer can only offer an early impression.

Here's the thing: a darker, more action-led Quasimodo can distinguish itself from familiar screen versions, but it also risks making the character’s suffering into atmosphere. The film’s treatment of his agency will matter as much as its period detail. A chase. A question of who owns the body at its center.

Netflix release date

The Hunchback, Soul of Paris premieres globally on Netflix on November 27, 2026. Its combination of a recognizable literary figure, epidemic-era Paris and a political chase gives the film a sharper historical identity than a straightforward retelling—and makes the trailer’s tone the clearest early signal of Richet’s approach.

The release date leaves the trailer and poster to carry the early conversation for now. Their emphasis on a hunted Quasimodo points toward a film that wants both the momentum of a thriller and the moral friction of a historical drama. That said, the premise is doing a lot of work: the finished film will have to make its political themes legible through character and action, not only through its setting. Whether it succeeds will depend on how convincingly it turns a familiar literary figure into a person with choices of his own.
