Patrick Stewart’s reflections on fatherhood leave a more complicated legacy than his celebrated roles: he believed his devotion to acting came at a lasting cost to his relationship with his children. In later years, he tried to be more present for his four grandchildren, though he never said that this erased the pain between him and his son and daughter.
Stewart died at 86. His candid interviews over the years show an actor who could name the choices he regretted, while acknowledging that recognition alone could not repair the damage.
His career often came before family

In a 2009 interview with The Independent, Stewart spoke about his children, Daniel and Sophie, from his first marriage to Sheila Falconer. The couple married in 1966, and Stewart said his demanding work with the Royal Shakespeare Company regularly took him away from home while the children were young.
“I could’ve done better as a parent when my kids were little,” he said, describing a period when work consumed his attention. “I was just obsessed with my work and everything else took second place,” he added.
That admission is striking alongside the scale of his career, which spanned acclaimed stage work and international fame. Stewart’s own account, though, centered on the personal cost: the years he spent pursuing roles were years he could not recover with his children.
Grandfatherhood offered a chance to show up

Stewart had four grandchildren, two through Daniel and two through Sophie. In that same 2009 interview, he said he was trying to make a different effort with them: “I’m trying to correct that now wherever possible with my grandchildren.”
He also said his children seemed to have forgiven him. “And my own children seem to have forgiven me,” he said. But his later comments suggest that forgiveness and closeness were not the same thing.
My read is that Stewart saw being a grandfather as a real opportunity to be more involved, while understanding it could not give him back the time he missed as a father.
He described an enduring distance from his children

By 2023, Stewart was describing a painful relationship with Daniel and Sophie. In an interview with the Irish Independent, he called their connection “practically non-existent.”
“There’s not a day that goes by that I’m not pained by the memory of my children,” he said. Stewart also took responsibility for his part in the family’s difficulties, saying, “I always put my acting work first, before my family.”
Those remarks put his earlier hope of forgiveness in a different light. He had tried to change how he showed up for the next generation, yet the distance with his children remained a daily source of grief.
Love remained, even as relationships stayed unresolved

While discussing his 2023 memoir, Making It So, with The Guardian, Stewart said his family relationships remained unsettled. He connected some of the strain to problems in his earlier marriages and put the central contradiction plainly: “I love my children. But our relationships, they haven’t worked out.”
The interview noted that he remained close to his grandchildren despite the difficulties with their parents. That bond gave him a valued place in the younger generation’s lives, but Stewart did not present it as a substitute for repairing things with Daniel and Sophie.
His family history also included two ended marriages: his marriage to Falconer ended in 1990, and his marriage to producer Wendy Neuss ended in 2003. He married singer Sunny Ozell in 2013 and described that relationship as a source of happiness. It did not resolve the sadness he carried about his children.

Stewart died on October 28 at his Los Angeles home after a brief illness involving Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, surrounded by loved ones. He never publicly confirmed a full reconciliation with his children. What his interviews do show is a man who recognized the limits of belated change: he could try to be a more attentive grandfather, but the relationship he most regretted remained unresolved.
