Tarek El Moussa’s $150,000 gift to his daughter Taylor is an easy target for criticism. His defense rests on two arguments: she’d earned a reward through her effort, and he wanted her in a safer car. The first is a matter of parenting judgment; the second is more relatable, though it doesn’t erase the scale of the purchase.
The HGTV personality said Taylor hadn’t expected a luxury vehicle and would have been happy with something far less expensive. He points to her grades, soccer record and work ethic as evidence that the BMW wasn’t simply handed to a teenager who takes privilege for granted.
Why El Moussa says Taylor earned the car
On an October 28 appearance on Nicole Lapin’s “Money Rehab” podcast, El Moussa said Taylor received a BMW X5 before her 16th birthday after earning a 4.2 GPA and MVP honors on her freshman soccer team. He described her as “an absolutely fantastic kid,” according to PEOPLE.
Lapin raised the obvious question: could a gift this expensive spoil a teenager? El Moussa argued that Taylor’s record suggested otherwise. In his view, someone who keeps up her grades, contributes to her team and does extra coaching has shown the discipline to appreciate a reward. “For me, this is a reward for all the work she’s done,” he said.
He also acknowledged that Taylor’s childhood has been very different from his own. She was around luxury from a young age, including flying on private jets as a toddler. El Moussa’s claim is that this exposure hasn’t stopped her from working hard. The podcast account gives his reasoning, though it can’t settle the broader question of how a six-figure gift shapes a teenager’s expectations.
Safety was part of the decision

El Moussa said Taylor would have accepted a “used Honda,” but he felt better about her driving a sturdy SUV. “The biggest thing for me was safety,” he said. He also uses a tracking app to monitor her location and speed as she gets accustomed to driving.
The BMW wasn’t the result of a long search, at least according to his account. El Moussa recalled driving along the Pacific Coast Highway with Taylor, suggesting they stop at a BMW dealership. She took to the vehicle, and he decided to buy it.
Lapin also asked whether the money might have been put to better use as an investment. El Moussa said Taylor already has investments in stocks and real estate. That answer explains his thinking, but the fragment offers no details about those investments.
A family surprise, coordinated by Taylor’s parents and stepmother
The gift also became a family event. In August, El Moussa teamed up with his ex-wife Christina Haack and wife Heather Rae El Moussa to surprise Taylor. She thought she was going to another driving lesson, according to TV Insider. Instead, Haack and Heather appeared with the BMW and a large pink bow. Taylor looked stunned, then hugged her family.
Heather posted the surprise on Instagram, joking about the three adults managing to coordinate it. The scene says something about the family’s current dynamic: El Moussa and Haack divorced in 2018 and share Taylor and Brayden, yet they’ve continued parenting together and reunited professionally on HGTV’s “The Flip Off.” The celebration offered a visible example of their ability to put the children first.

Family ties after a difficult divorce

The cooperative birthday surprise carries added weight given the difficult period El Moussa has described after his separation from Haack. In September, he reflected on lessons from the divorce, as The Blast previously reported. The latest family moment presents a warmer picture of how their relationship has changed.
El Moussa has also called fatherhood his most rewarding job, despite the demands of his television and real estate careers, in an earlier interview highlighted by The Blast. His comments about Taylor fit that emphasis on family, even if the price of this particular birthday present is beyond what most parents can consider.
What the birthday tributes added

The BMW was one part of Taylor’s 16th birthday. When she turned 16 on September 22, her father, mother and stepmother also posted tributes. PEOPLE reported that Haack praised Taylor’s grades, soccer achievements and determination, while Heather wrote about watching her grow up. El Moussa shared photos from different stages of her childhood and expressed pride in the person she’s becoming.
For a teenager in a high-profile blended family, that public show of support may carry its own weight. The expensive car will draw attention, and questions about wealth and parenting are unlikely to disappear. But El Moussa’s case is that Taylor’s effort, character and safety mattered more to him than the sticker price.
