The McDonald’s bag was a punchline, but the story behind it shows how Taylor Swift turned a casual request into a paid guest appearance. Nelly says she offered him $50,000 to join her onstage in Houston during the 2011 Speak Now tour, then had the cash delivered in the restaurant bag he’d joked about.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club on Thursday, October 29, Nelly said he’d known Swift for years and that she’d attended some of his shows. He recalled getting an unexpected call from her asking whether he could come to Houston for two performances the next day and the day after.

Swift told him she and her friends had put together a routine to his hit “Hot in Herre.” She also warned that she didn’t have much of a budget for the favor, according to Nelly’s account, reported by Us Weekly.

Nelly said he offered to do it for free, but Swift proposed $50,000 and transportation on her private jet. He joked that she could put the money in a McDonald’s bag. At the Houston show, he said, Swift’s father handed him the bag with the cash. Nelly recalled that Swift had been playing three or four nights at the baseball stadium, which held 56,000 people.

More than one song, and more than one tour

The pair performed “Hot in Herre” and then sang “Just a Dream” together. Their collaboration didn’t end in Houston: Nelly later appeared with Swift on the Red Tour in 2013 and the 1989 World Tour in 2015. The sequence suggests the one-off invitation grew into a recurring onstage connection.

Nelly and his wife, Ashanti, were among the guests at Swift’s July wedding to Travis Kelce. Ashanti said the gathering brought together people from many circles. Nelly said Swift’s long career and standing in music made a wide guest list unsurprising; Kelce’s profile as a Kansas City Chiefs tight end added another network of connections.

The reported guests included actor Tom Cruise, gymnast Simone Biles and former Disney CEO Bob Iger. The source doesn’t establish whether Nelly performed at the reception, despite speculation about the wedding entertainment.

Tim McGraw says he didn’t perform at the reception

Tim McGraw, who attended with his wife Faith Hill, dismissed online claims that he sang at the wedding. “I didn’t perform at her wedding. That was a rumor,” he told Esquire editor-in-chief Michael Sebastian in an interview published Wednesday, October 28. “The internet’s not always correct.”

McGraw said Swift has remained close to his family and their three daughters since the release of her 2006 debut single, “Tim McGraw.” He called her a “genius songwriter” whose music reaches multiple generations, and described her as one of the most talented people he has met. He also said he was happy she had found Kelce, whom he called a “cool guy.”

The Houston story offers a more concrete glimpse of Swift’s live-show relationships: a spontaneous request, a crowd of tens of thousands and a guest appearance that kept resurfacing on later tours.
