Netflix renews The Diplomat after a ratings test

Netflix has ordered a fifth season of The Diplomat, putting Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler back in the political fray. The announcement came two weeks after season 4 premiered on October 15, 2026. This renewal is more telling than the number of weeks it took: Netflix gave the show less advance security than before and waited to see how it performed.

The timing marks a change. Netflix confirmed season 3 weeks before season 2 arrived in October 2024, then renewed the series for season 4 at its May 2025 Upfront, months before season 3 premiered. The fifth-season order also matches our season 5 renewal tracker’s prediction. This time, though, the show had to make its case on the charts first. It did.

Season 4 holds its audience

Season 4 climbed to third place on Netflix’s Global Top 10 in its second week and appeared in the Top 10 across 63 countries. That tracks with the first week’s results: 4.8 million views and a fifth-place debut on the English TV chart, the same opening as season 3. The numbers suggest the series has settled into a steady audience after the sharper decline between its first and second seasons.

The longer record is substantial: Netflix says the four seasons have spent 13 weeks in its Top 10, appeared in the Top 10 in 87 countries, and accumulated more than 130 million views since the show debuted in April 2023. Season 4 also set a new high for the series’ owned social impressions within 13 days of launch. Netflix hasn’t shared the figure, so that milestone is difficult to judge on its own.

The chart’s five-week comparison shows season 2 ending the period with 16.8 million cumulative views, ahead of season 3’s 14.3 million. Season 4 had reached 10.3 million by week two, the latest point shown for it. Across all three seasons, the combined final total in the data is 41.4 million views. These are running totals drawn from Netflix’s weekly Top 10 engagement reports; the seasons don’t all have the same number of weeks represented.

Awards add to the show’s staying power. For season 3, Keri Russell won the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, Allison Janney won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and the series received seven Emmy nominations overall.

Who’s likely to return?

Netflix hasn’t disclosed season 5’s story or confirmed its cast. The announcement did name creator and showrunner Debora Cahn, who will return. Season 4’s executive producers were Janice Williams, Keri Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie; it’s reasonable to expect that group to continue, though Netflix hasn’t confirmed it.

Unless season 4’s ending changes the picture, the likely returning cast includes Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn. Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, and Nana Mensah are also expected back. Jodie Whittaker joined season 4 as a surprise new prime minister; whether her character carries over is still unknown.

Before season 4 launched, Cahn kept any talk of another season close to the vest: “You can ask, but I can’t answer.” Now Netflix has answered for her.

Season 5 probably won’t arrive soon

A 2027 filming start looks unlikely so soon after the renewal. Season 4 filmed in London through the first half of 2026 and arrived in October. If the next season follows a similar schedule, late 2027 is an optimistic possibility; 2028 may be more realistic, which would break the show’s annual release pattern. The timing remains uncertain. We’ll update our list of renewed Netflix series as Netflix shares more.

For more on season 4, Cahn discussed the central question behind the season. We’ve also spoken with composer Marcelo Zarvos and costume designer Jenny Gering.
