Netflix’s game adaptations have become a substantial part of its programming strategy. The shift is striking: a slate that once leaned on animated series such as Castlevania and Arcane now includes live-action projects tied to major franchises, fresh deals with SEGA and Blizzard, and Donald Glover’s involvement in a PUBG adaptation. That expansion is significant, but a long list of announced projects doesn’t guarantee a steady stream of releases. Here’s what’s confirmed to be in development, and where each project stands.

Netflix has already adapted a broad mix of games and game-related properties:

  • Arcane
  • Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix
  • Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne
  • Cyberpunk Edgerunners
  • Devil May Cry
  • DOTA: Dragon’s Blood
  • Dragon’s Dogma
  • Dragon Age
  • Exploding Kittens
  • Fate 4pocolypse
  • Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild
  • Ninokuni
  • Onimusha
  • Rabbids Invasion: Mission to Mars
  • Resident Evil
  • Splinter Cell: Deathwatch
  • Sonic Prime
  • Tekken: Bloodline
  • Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft
  • Trivia Quest

Upcoming Video Game Adaptations

A project’s presence on an old announcement list can be misleading. Several titles once associated with Netflix have been canceled, gone quiet, or moved elsewhere. Plans for The Division were scrapped. Beyond Good and Evil appears to have stalled, while Ubisoft’s Far Cry—announced for Netflix in June 2021—is now headed to FX/Disney, according to Deadline. Netflix’s rumored Skull and Bones adaptation has also been inactive for some time.

Other announcements have simply faded from view. A live-action Carmen Sandiego film was announced in 2018, and Mega Man is in a similar state. Steve Blackman’s planned Horizon: Zero Dawn series was scrapped; Sony Pictures is now developing the property as a movie.

Arcane won’t get a full entry here, though a spin-off is reportedly in development. A source told us it will cover Iron & Chains.

Returning seasons of existing adaptations also fall outside this rundown. For reference, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch has a second season coming, and Devil May Cry will end with its third season.

Assassin’s Creed

Showrunners: Roberto Patino and David Wiener
Pilot Director: Johan Renck
Studio: Ubisoft Film & Television / Netflix
Cast: Toby Wallace, Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Nabhaan Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Sean Harris, Youssef Kerkour, Louis McCartney, Mirren Mack, Ramzy Bedia, and Corrado Invernizzi
Genre: Action / Adventure, Historical Drama
Expected Netflix Release Date: Late 2027

netflix assassins creed series everything we know

After years of development, Netflix’s live-action take on Ubisoft’s stealth-action franchise has finished filming. The series was first announced in 2020, but its path to production included the 2023 departure of original showrunner Jeb Stuart. Netflix ordered the series in July 2025, bringing Roberto Patino and David Wiener in to lead it. Filming began in Rome on March 9, 2026, with Cinecittà Studios as the production base, and the seven-month shoot wrapped in mid-October.

Netflix hasn’t named the historical setting. Production listings point to Ancient Rome in the early years of Emperor Nero’s reign, which would give the show a period the games haven’t explored before. That could help the adaptation find its own footing within a franchise built around jumping between historical eras.

The official description frames the story as a 60-minute serialized thriller:

“This high-octane thriller is centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

Johan Renck, whose credits include HBO’s Chernobyl, directed the pilot. Toby Wallace leads the cast, with Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, and Nabhaan Rizwan as series regulars. Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Sean Harris, Youssef Kerkour, Louis McCartney, Mirren Mack, Ramzy Bedia, and Corrado Invernizzi are also aboard in recurring roles. Their characters remain undisclosed.

A late-2027 release is the earliest plausible window given the scale of the shoot and the visual effects and post-production such a period epic is likely to need. Adi Shankar was once rumored to be attached to an animated version, but there’s no evidence that project advanced.

The series has wrapped filming.

BioShock (AKA: Rapture)

Director: Francis Lawrence
Writer: Michael Green
Producers: Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Cameron MacConomy, and Strauss Zelnick
Production Studios: Take-Two Interactive, Vertigo Entertainment, and Netflix
Genre: Sci-Fi / Fantasy, Action / Adventure, Video Game Adaptation
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

The BioShock film is still in development at Netflix, despite a history that would make a stalled project easy to write off. Hollywood has tried to bring the acclaimed 2007 game to the screen since the 2010s, with directors including Gore Verbinski attached at various points. Netflix eventually took it on, with The Hunger Games and I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence set to direct and Oscar-nominated writer Michael Green (Logan, Blade Runner 2049) writing the script.

Strikes, rewrites, and budget changes have slowed the film. In February 2026, producer Roy Lee discussed its status with Collider. He said Lawrence’s schedule is the main bottleneck: the director has been working on Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk and the next Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping. Once post-production on the latter finishes around September 2026, Lawrence is expected to turn back to Rapture.

Lee also suggested the film may be timed alongside new game releases. “I know that Netflix and Take-Two are very anxious to see the movie come out because they want to have the release coincide with some of the potential new incarnations of the game,” he said.

In April 2026, Netflix renewed copyright registrations for BioShock, covering the first two main games, BioShock Infinite, and the book BioShock: Rapture. Lee had said Netflix hoped to settle casting before the end of 2026, with production targeted for early 2027. The latest updates, however, make that start date look less likely.

Crazy Taxi

Writers: Dan Gregor and Doug Mand
Producers: Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher (Original Film), and Toru Nakahara (SEGA)
Production Studios: SEGA, Original Film, and Netflix
Genre: Live-Action, Comedy, Action, Video Game Adaptation
Format: Feature Film
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

crazy taxi coming to netflix

Crazy Taxi is headed for a live-action feature film at Netflix, part of a multi-title agreement with SEGA announced in September 2026. The pitch is a comedy that captures the arcade game’s frantic driving, timed fares, and spectacular jumps. That premise gives the film an obvious tone to chase, though there’s no director or cast attached yet.

The production team has experience translating SEGA properties for film. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film are producing with SEGA producer Toru Nakahara; all three worked on Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writers behind the 2025 The Naked Gun reboot, are scripting.

Moritz and Ascher say the movie is intended for people who played the original on Dreamcast. Nakahara has promised something “hilariously crazy.” The timing may also serve SEGA’s broader plans: a new game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is scheduled for 2027, echoing the way the Sonic films have supported the larger franchise.

The film was announced as part of Netflix and SEGA’s multi-title deal.

Diablo

Production Studios: Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix
Genre: Animation, Dark Fantasy, Action / Adventure
Format: Animated Series
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

diablo animated series back in the works at netflix

After years of rumors and a legal dispute that strained relations between the companies, an animated Diablo series is officially back in development at Netflix. Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the project at BlizzCon’s opening ceremony in September 2026. So far, that’s almost all the public knows: there’s no named animation studio or showrunner, no story description, and no release date. Blizzard says more details will come later.

The history helps explain why this announcement matters. Reports of Netflix anime adaptations of both Diablo and Overwatch surfaced in 2018 and 2019. Nick van Dyk, then co-president of Activision Blizzard Studios, even listed a Diablo series as being in pre-production on his LinkedIn profile. Both projects later stalled after Activision Blizzard sued Netflix over its hiring of former Activision Blizzard CFO Spencer Neumann.

The new Diablo series is reportedly separate from the broader Xbox licensing package mentioned earlier, so its progress isn’t dependent on that agreement. Whether Overwatch will also get another chance remains unknown.

Blizzard’s announcement confirmed the series is in development.

Gears of War

Director: David Leitch
Writer: Jon Spaihts
Producers: Kelly McCormick and David Leitch (87North Productions)
Studio: The Coalition / Netflix
Genre: Sci-Fi / Fantasy, Action / Adventure, Video Game Adaptation
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

A Gears of War film spent more than a decade moving among studios, including New Line Cinema and Universal, before Netflix announced its project in 2022. The story follows humanity near collapse as the subterranean Locust threaten extinction, and Delta Squad—led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix—takes on humanity’s last stand.

“A planet is on the brink of societal collapse when a threat in the form of underground creatures known as the Locust take humanity to the verge of extinction. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity’s last stand.”

Netflix has recruited director David Leitch, whose action credits include Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy. He signed on in 2025. Jon Spaihts, an Oscar-nominated co-writer of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, is writing the screenplay.

In April 2026, producer Kelly McCormick of 87North Productions told Esquire that the team was concentrating on the script’s emotional center rather than racing toward a release date. “It’s a rich universe with incredible scale, emotion, mythology, and action, so our focus has always been on getting it right rather than rushing it,” McCormick told the outlet. “The project is moving well, and we’re writing diligently right now. That stage is so important… you’re not just adapting a game—you’re building a cinematic experience that honors what people love while also standing on its own as a great film.”

The script is still being written, so Netflix hasn’t announced casting. Dave Bautista, meanwhile, has been openly campaigning for years to play Marcus Fenix.

The projects here show how far Netflix’s game adaptations have spread: fantasy animation, live-action crime, family comedy and even a cooking competition. The slate is broad, but several titles still lack release dates, and some have already changed course once. For now, the creative teams and production status tell us more than any firm sense of when viewers will see them.

The animated series mentioned alongside the original movie announcement in 2022 appears to have stalled; we believe it is no longer in active development.

Magic The Gathering Being Redeveloped At Netflix

Magic: The Gathering has taken the long way to the screen. Netflix first announced an adaptation in 2019, with the Russo Brothers attached and a 2022 release planned. That iteration faded away. In September 2024, Netflix confirmed a new creative team, led by showrunner and writer Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys) and director Patrick Osborne, the Oscar-winning animator behind Feast.

The project now has a major animation partner, too. At the 2025 Annecy Animation Film Festival, Netflix announced Budapest-based DIGIC Pictures as its animation studio. DIGIC is known for video game cinematics, including work on Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws, as well as Prime Video’s Secret Level.

Netflix Director of Adult Animation Dylan Thomas described the series as an “epic fantasy saga” about three powerful planeswalkers travelling across infinite worlds. Fan favorites Nahiri and Ajani are confirmed to appear. Netflix says it plans to share more in 2026, and the series appeared on its active slate in the October 2026 PUBG announcement. After the false start, that’s the clearest sign yet that this adaptation is still progressing.

PUBG

Director / Writer / Star: Donald Glover
Writer: Stephen Glover
Executive Producers: Donald Glover, Stephen Glover, Michael Schaefer (NEON TV), Fam Udeorji (Gilga), and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee (LV3H)

Genre: Live-Action, Action, Drama, Video Game Adaptation
Format: Series
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

Donald Glover’s involvement makes Netflix’s PUBG adaptation one of the more unusual projects on its game slate. Announced in October 2026, the live-action series will see Glover write, direct, executive produce and star. Netflix has not revealed a plot, cast beyond Glover, or production schedule, so there’s little to judge yet beyond the names attached.

KRAFTON launched PUBG in 2017 as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The game helped popularize battle royale: 100 players land on an island, and the playable area contracts until one remains. It holds seven Guinness World Records. KRAFTON is also building an original entertainment business through LV3H, its new entertainment arm, which is developing and producing the series.

Glover’s brother and longtime Atlanta collaborator, Stephen Glover, will write and executive produce. The other executive producers are Michael Schaefer of NEON TV, Fam Udeorji of Gilga, and LV3H’s Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee.

There’s an older Netflix connection, though its status is murky. In 2021, KRAFTON announced an animated PUBG project with Adi Shankar that was widely reported to be headed to Netflix. That project has gone quiet, and the new announcement doesn’t mention it. Given that this new series is only entering development, a release before 2028 seems unlikely.

Sifu

Writer: T.S. Nowlin
Producers: Chad Stahelski, Dmitri Johnson, Jason Spitz, Alex Young, Dan Jevons, and Michael L. Goldberg
Production Studios: 87Eleven Entertainment, Story Kitchen, and Netflix
Genre: Action, Martial Arts, Fantasy, Revenge
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

sifu game movie adaptation

Picture: Sloclap

Sifu is built around relentless hand-to-hand combat, so a live-action film will have to get the action right. The 2022 indie beat-’em-up from Sloclap is being adapted as a Netflix feature, with a revenge story that gives its fight scenes a built-in clock.

The film’s logline describes a martial arts student seeking revenge for the murder of their mentor. A magical talisman brings the student back to life after each death, but every resurrection causes them to age. If they grow too old, death becomes permanent and the quest ends unfinished.

87Eleven Entertainment, the production company led by Chad Stahelski of the John Wick franchise, is producing. Story Kitchen is co-producing; the game adaptation company was founded by Dmitri Johnson, producer of Sonic the Hedgehog, and former John Wick writer and creator Derek Kolstad. Sloclap figures Pierre Tarno and Jordan Layani are executive producers, a useful link to the game’s kung fu cinema influences.

T.S. Nowlin, whose credits include The Maze Runner films and Pacific Rim: Uprising, is writing the script. As of April 2026, the project was listed as “In Development,” with the screenplay underway. Netflix hasn’t named a director or cast member to play the aging protagonist. The martial arts work will likely demand substantial preparation, making 2028 a plausible earliest arrival, though no date has been announced.

Stranger Than Heaven

Producer: Toru Nakahara
Production Studios: SEGA, RGG Studio, and Netflix
Genre: Live-Action, Crime, Action, Drama, Video Game Adaptation
Format: Feature Film
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

stranger than heaven

Of the two films tied to SEGA’s September 2026 deal, Stranger Than Heaven has the more distinctive premise. Netflix has picked up a live-action feature adaptation of the new RGG Studio title. RGG is best known for the Like a Dragon franchise, previously called Yakuza, which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

The story is set in early 20th-century Japan and follows a foreigner who rises from poverty to become a feared yakuza and, later, an entertainment tycoon. Honor and betrayal shape that ascent. SEGA producer Toru Nakahara has called the film a “badass action drama.”

RGG’s work has already reached live action: Prime Video released Like a Dragon: Yakuza in 2024. This will be the studio’s first title adapted for Netflix. No writer, director or cast has been announced.

Format: 30-Minute Episodes
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

Netflix and developer Supercell are bringing both Clash of Clans and Clash Royale to animation. Netflix greenlit the project in May 2025, and production is underway on a half-hour serialized comedy-adventure.

The premise centers on a determined Barbarian who must gather a group of misfits and lead their village to fame and glory. That gives the show a clear comic engine, though the announced logline leaves the larger story open:

“Set in the iconic world of Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, this series follows a determined Barbarian who must rally a band of misfits and lead their village to fame and glory.”

Fletcher Moules is showrunner and executive producer. He directed Netflix’s animated film Entergalactic and has also directed several of the viral 3D Clash of Clans commercials. Ron Weiner, whose comedy credits include Futurama, Silicon Valley and Arrested Development, is head writer and executive producer. William Davies, writer of How to Train Your Dragon and Puss in Boots, is also an executive producer.

ICON Creative Studio, known for Action Pack, and Australia’s Flying Bark Productions will handle animation. Flying Bark has worked on several Netflix projects, including Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. With production underway and a team familiar with both comedy and the games’ visual style, this is one of the more clearly defined animated adaptations on the list.

Untitled Minecraft Animated Series

Showrunners: Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander
Head Writer: A.C. Bradley
Animation Studios: WildBrain and Flying Bark Productions
Genre: 3D/CGI Animation, Action / Adventure, Family Spectacle, Comedy
Format: 30-Minute Episodes
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

minecraft netflix series update annecy 2025

Netflix first announced its animated Minecraft series in May 2024, marking the franchise’s 15th anniversary. The next substantial update came at the 2025 Annecy Animation Film Festival, during the streamer’s “Get Ready for What’s Next!” presentation. It’s intended as a major part of Netflix’s “Family Spectacle” animation lineup and will be the first traditional, fully serialized animated TV series based on the game.

The series will tell an original story with new characters, presenting the block-building world from a fresh angle. Netflix’s logline is brief:

“This CG-animated series will feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of Minecraft in a new light.”

Showrunners and executive producers Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander previously made Netflix’s 2018 sci-fi film Next Gen. Their other credits include TMNT: We Strike Hard and Fade Away Into the Night and the animated film 9. At Annecy, Netflix animation executive Dominique Bazay said the team wants the series to feel authentic and familiar while creating a new experience that can welcome both longtime players and new viewers. Bazay added that the creative team are fans who actively play the game.

A.C. Bradley, creator and head writer of Marvel’s What If…? and a writer on Netflix’s Tales of Arcadia universe, is leading the scripts. Animation is a collaboration between WildBrain, known for Netflix’s Sonic Prime and Ninjago, and Australia-based Flying Bark Productions.

Netflix hasn’t announced a release date. A 2027 or 2028 debut seems possible given the early announcement, but that remains a projection rather than a confirmed schedule.

Untitled Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Series

Developed By: Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara
Production Studios: SEGA and Netflix
Genre: Animation, Kids, Comedy, Action / Adventure
Format: Animated Series

Sonic Prime Finds New Broadcast Home Away From Netflix

SEGA’s Netflix deal also includes another Sonic the Hedgehog animated series. It will be the character’s second Netflix show after Sonic Prime, which ran for three seasons from December 2022 to January 2024.

The new series is aimed at an upper preschool audience, a marked shift from Sonic Prime’s more action-heavy approach. Netflix describes it as a “high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids.” Developer Carlos Stevens is working with SEGA’s Toru Nakahara, who also produced Sonic Prime, the Paramount films and the Knuckles spin-off. Netflix has yet to announce an animation studio, voice cast or release window.

Executive Producers: Oli De-Vine, Phil Duncan, and Gemma Langford
Genre: Reality TV
Format: 60-Minute Episodes
Expected Netflix Release Date: TBA

overcooked to be added to netflix games

Overcooked turns frantic kitchen teamwork into a real cooking competition. If you’ve played the game, you know the appeal is as much about the chaos between teammates as the food. Netflix’s unscripted adaptation will put that dynamic into a 60-minute reality format.

A24 acquired the game rights in November 2025 and is developing the show exclusively for Netflix. The studio is known for Beef, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Uncut Gems, an unexpected fit for a kitchen competition based on a cheerful, stressful game.

The original team is involved: Ghost Town Games founders Phil Duncan and Oli De-Vine, who created the franchise, are executive producers alongside Ghost Town writer and manager Gemma Langford. Netflix has also released its own special edition of the game on its Cloud games service.

That’s our current roundup of Netflix’s game adaptations in development. If we’ve missed a project, or you’ve spotted an update to one of these, let us know in the comments.
